Restaurant Chain Expansion Trends: June 2026 Multi-Unit Analysis

Market Analysis
Based on restaurant development filings reported through June 25, 2026.

National Brands and Regional Chains Remain Active

The June reporting period showed expansion activity from national chains, regional restaurant companies, franchise systems, and emerging multi-unit brands.

Brands appearing in the report included Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, CAVA, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Mountain Mike’s Pizza, Blank Street Coffee, Jimmy John’s, 7 Brew Coffee, and HTeaO.

These concepts represent several operating models, including quick service, fast casual, bakery, coffee, pizza, beverage, and specialty formats.

Multi-Unit Growth Spans Several Formats

Casual and family dining produced the largest share of restaurant filings during the reporting period, accounting for 50% of all filings. That was up from 43% during the previous reporting period.

Quick-service restaurants represented 22% of filings. Fast casual concepts also remained active across multiple regions.

For chain and multi-unit operators, the data points to activity across more than one service model rather than one dominant format.

Expansion Concentrates in Growth States

Restaurant chain expansion remained concentrated in several high-volume states.

Texas produced the largest number of filings, with 357 during the reporting period. That represented approximately 30% of all restaurant filings nationwide.

Much of the Texas volume came from Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston-Galveston, and the Austin-San Antonio corridor.

Florida, California, New York, Georgia, and North Carolina also ranked among the most active states for restaurant development.

New York and South Carolina Stand Out

New York generated 144 filings and moved into fourth place nationally during the reporting period.

Much of New York’s activity was concentrated across Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.

South Carolina entered the national top ten, adding another southeastern market to monitor for restaurant chain and regional brand expansion.

Expansion Signals Appear Before Opening

Chain locations often appear in public records before they are announced to consumers.

Common sources include alcohol license applications, building permits, planning and zoning records, construction filings, corporate registrations, local government documents, and regional business publications.

Depending on the source and project stage, a new location may appear one to six months before opening.

Multi-Unit Growth Snapshot

The full reporting period identified 1,188 restaurant opening filings across 49 states and 72 reporting regions.

Total filings declined from 1,525 during the previous reporting period, a 22% decrease.

Even with lower filing volume, the report continued to show activity from established restaurant systems, regional operators, and brands adding locations across selected trade areas.

Why the June Report Is Useful for Chain Tracking

Restaurant chain growth is not limited to grand opening announcements. Permits, licenses, registrations, and local filings can show where operators are preparing new units before openings become visible in consumer-facing news.

For suppliers, brokers, franchise groups, real estate teams, and market researchers, these early records help identify which brands are expanding, which states are producing activity, and which trade areas are receiving new units.
