Reading the archive

Year-only Atlas Directory entries identify the year-established field as recorded. This is distinct from a research-report year, an underlying filing date and the date on which RestaurantData collected a record. The original source classification is identified as unrecorded when it is unavailable.

The research week identifies the report edition in which RestaurantData included a location. Source labels such as “State filing” and “Legal filing” follow the underlying weekly record.

Where the original record contains a calendar date, the entry reproduces that date as reported timing. The reporting week, underlying filing date and reported timing can differ.

The records are selected historical examples. They do not represent every location, every filing or every period in a company’s development.

Historical Vector Archive FAQ

What is the Historical Vector Archive?

A collection of selected historical restaurant location records, organized by company and year. Entries show historical addresses and years, with research weeks, source dates and source labels where available. Most company pages contain 30 records; the P.F. Chang’s page contains 29. Sources include dated house-file research, state and legal filings, news articles, building permits, company announcements and clearly labeled Atlas Directory entries.

Why are records for locations that have closed included?

The archive preserves historical research about restaurant locations and development activity. These historical records include locations that have since closed. A record may concern a registration, application, proposed location or reported development; it does not establish that a restaurant was operating when the record was reported or that it operates today. Entries are not labeled with current operating status.

What do the years and reporting weeks mean?

A research week identifies the RestaurantData report edition in which a location appeared. It is not necessarily the underlying filing date or an opening date. Year-only Atlas Directory entries preserve the year-established field as recorded. Those years are not filing dates, report dates or collection dates, and may predate the research itself. A company-announcement date identifies the publication of that announcement. Each entry identifies the meaning of its year.

Where did the records come from?

The records come from RestaurantData’s historical research files. Some were entered by hand from paper sources, including material collected before online records were widely available. Others were collected or transferred electronically. Some originated in newspaper legal notices concerning business registrations or license applications, including alcohol-license and fictitious-name matters. Some entries come from the RestaurantData.com Atlas Directory and retain only the available year-established field. The archive identifies these entries separately from dated filing research.

What do the source types mean?

  • State filing: The original house-file label for research drawn from a state agency filing or record.
  • Legal filing: A broad label for a legal notice, registration or similar filing, including DBA or fictitious-name matters where identified.
  • Newspaper article: A published news article. The label does not establish that the reporter interviewed company principals.
  • Building permit: A construction or build-out permit recorded by the relevant permitting authority.
  • Public record: A broad public-record label used where the precise subtype was not retained in the archive. It is not reclassified as a particular filing type without supporting information.
  • Atlas Directory record: An entry drawn from the RestaurantData.com Atlas Directory, showing the year-established field as recorded. It is not presented as a dated state or legal filing.
  • Company announcement: A dated statement published by the company concerning a restaurant location or development.
  • Source not recorded: The precise underlying source classification was not retained. A known collection, such as the Atlas Directory, is identified where available; a filing type is not inferred.

Why do source labels vary from record to record?

Research methods and source categories changed over time. Earlier records did not always retain the same level of detail about DBA, fictitious-name, alcohol-license or other filings. The archive preserves the available historical source labels rather than assigning a more specific type without supporting information.

Do you remove records from the archive?

Valid historical records are retained, including records for locations that have since closed. Records are not removed simply to change a count. Documented factual errors may be corrected with a dated note, and entries found to be irrelevant to the restaurant-location archive, such as headquarters or support-office records, may be excluded. Later changes to a location do not, by themselves, make the historical record incorrect.

Why might a historical address differ from a current address?

Street names, numbering, postal conventions, abbreviations and location details can change over time. The archive retains the historical address details available in the research record; presentation and formatting may be standardized. A documented factual error may be corrected with a dated note. Some historical locations may not be included in the current RestaurantData.com Atlas Directory.

Can a record tell me whether a location is operating today?

No. These entries document historical research, directory fields or source publications; they do not confirm a location’s present operating status. Location details and operating status are not routinely reverified. Some listed locations may not be included in the current RestaurantData.com Atlas Directory. Absence from Atlas does not, by itself, establish that a location is closed. Confirm current information separately.
